Dinosaur Computer to Development System Back to "Neatness"

Recycle, Re-purpose, Reuse

How many old computers and laptops do you have? Personally, I am a scrounge when it comes to old hardware, bordering on being an electronics hoarder! Yes, I have boxes of connectors and buckets of cables, probably close to the inventory of your neighborhood Radio Shack (if you still have one). I look at it from a different perspective. I am just a well-planned prepper, just in case of an upcoming Best Buy Zombie Apocalypse.

Seriously, all developers keep their computers and other electronic devices up-to-date in order to effectively use the latest technology as a part of their work. I am no different. But that leaves garages and basements full of what I call dinosaur hardware: last year’s laptop with a broken display, the desktop computer with not enough memory, a VGA monitor, a 9600-baud modem. I still haven’t figured out a reuse of the modem, but the others are usable right now with a little bit of ingenuity. Here’s how.

Needs

Here is my list of needs from all my crap in the garage (as it is sometimes referred to by an anonymous party 😜).

  • a working computer or laptop, meaning
    • a motherboard with a processor and memory (0.5 MB or higher)
    • external connections for a monitor, and keyboard (no mouse required)
    • a free USB port
    • Note: if it has a working CD or DVD drive, all the better!

The first steps of the process will determine if it is bootable. If it already is, that’s cool too!

Next, create a bootable image of Debian Linux, whether it be on CD, DVD, or a 4GB memory stick.
