Yes, the road trip for this year has come to a close. Now it is time to catch up on a ton of stuff including posting some pictures from the trip. Blogging on the road was a rought one since we modified travel on the fly and skipped KOA's with Internet access in favor of getting a few miles further on the road. Satellite access would be nice, but is unaffordable for the poor college student... Time to make the donuts!

Freaking Snow

Freaking Snow! You guessed it - yet another day with snow in June. Does the word Alpine come to mind? More later - off to Yellowstone!

Back to Basics for Next 2 Weeks

This will probably be the last Internet connection for the rest of the class. Off to Grand Teton National Park this morning with a forecast of snow for tonight. Off to the wilderness!

Pocatello for the Night

The class is officially started and we have arrived at our first stop just outside the Grand Teton National Park. Tonight, we are at the Pocattelo, Idaho KOA. More later - need to get stuff set up for dinner!

The “S” Word

In this case, the S-word is SNOW! We went from temperatures in the 70's in Omaha to right now around 40 degrees in Laramie, Wyoming at 7166 feet above sea level and, yes, there is snow on the ground from a storm last night. More later time to crank up the furnace!

One Medium, One Longer

Stopping for the night at the West Omaha KOA. We did have a good day, stopping off at a repeat stop at Kingdom City, Missouri. Why there? If you have a single nostalgic bone in your body, you must stop at NostalgiaVilleUSA. For dinner, we made a repeat visit to Famous Dave's Legendary Pit Bar-B-Que. Tomorrow, we are going to strike out at dawn and see if we can make the long reach to Salt Lake City! Stay tuned!

Two Long or Three Short?

It is time to get Mary up (coffee is done and newspaper is here) and we need to decide what is ahead for the next three days. I really would like to get to Salt Lake City by Saturday night, but two long days of driving is not something to look forward to either. An alternative would be to go to West Omaha, Nebraska tonight, Laramie, Wyoming on Saturday, pushing our Salt Lake City arrival to early afternoon on Sunday. While it would probably eliminate the visit to the copper mine before the class (we can always hit it afterwards), it would be a little more relaxing pace before the class. We also have to consider restocking supplies, getting some laundry done, and such. I think I'll get Mary up and decide when we hit the road shortly.

Amazing Mounds

Monk Mound We spent the afternoon at Cahokia Mounds outside St Louis today. These are some of the most amazing earthen structures, like the picture above of Monk Mound which is over 100' feet in height (365 steps in two sets to the top). More pictures will be up over the weekend. Also, here is an aerial view (via Acme Mapper). The crosshairs are directly over the highest point on Monk Mound. Tonight, we are staying at the KOA St Louis East. We have to leave early tomorrow for a long day on the road. Next stop is hopefully Gothenburg, Nebraska, followed by Salt Lake City on Saturday.

Need Mounds

No, not the candy bar, but the remnant terrain structures that can be seen throughout the US, constructed by native Americans hundreds and thousands of years ago. This morning, we are heading to the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site near Collinsville, Illinois. Time to get these campers moving! We've got a two-hour drive ahead of us and then another 5 hours to our (hopeful) destination for the evening, the Lawrence, Kansas KOA.

They’re Here!

(Left to Right) Mary, Eileen, and Jane
Goldie! They're here and dinner is shortly to be on the fire! Too hungry to write! Later!

In the (farm)land of Lincoln

Just arrived at the Springfield, Illinois KOA. It is nestled in farmland just off of the lakes southeast of the city. There is a beautiful breeze blowing through the trees and we have the awning out. Now, just waiting for Eileen, Jane, and Goldie to arrive. Nice feature here - free WIFI under the trees!

First Stop in Dayton, OH

Nice country campground Beautiful campground - our last stop on last year's road trip and our first stop this year. Hustling this morning, off to Springfield, IL and the Lincoln Museum where we are meeting Eileen and Jane.
