Way back when, I decided to catch the early wave of blogging. The first attempt was called Sliding with Jim with the then new Blogger tool (as in Pyra Labs, pre-Google purchase). Then, when I reentered the academic world, it was transformed into My Sediments Exactly, an earth science play on words that aptly described my journal and the sentiments I expressed.
Well, after a yearlong hiatus, My Sediments Exactly returned complete with several years of archives. While reading through it the other day, I realized a lot had changed and, more importantly, a lot of the material in it was outdated and inaccurate (web sites do come and go rapidly). It reemerged using the fine blogging software, WordPress. It is fine for most, but for me, the fact that it is 100% PHP is a very big drawback. At best, I hack my way through making modifications in PHP, usually with much trial and error (and cursing and swearing). I also found that the templating system while being very creative is rather inflexible for those of us who do not care for PHP.
So, I have again gone back to using Movable Type, the MTOS (Open Source) version, written in a language I can eat, sleep, and drink, perl. I can again use server side includes and write widgets and do all sorts of creative things that I am know to do.
And, with this new blog, a new moniker , too... Gneiss, Tuff and a Little Wacke. Yes, another goofy geology play on words that I found on a t-shirt. Describes me quite appropriately I do believe.
So, let the new journey begin! Merry Christmas!
For the uninitiated, see the Wikipedia entries on gneiss, tuff, and (gray)wacke.
